In April this year, another symbolic, sad case happened. “Poland is heading in the wrong direction demographically”

– The population of Poland, which is 38.3 million according to the latest census, will decrease to 33.9 million in 2050 and 28.2 million in 2080. At the moment (…) we know that by 2030 we have a fairly well-stocked resource of people who will work, which will ensure the stability of the labor market to a large extent, but from 2030 an absolutely large decline in the population will begin – Professor Gertruda Uścińska, the president of the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), said in May.

The fertility rate in 2022 fell to 1,261 from 1,320 in 2021 – GUS reported at the end of May. “The data of the Central Statistical Office only confirm that Poland is moving in the wrong direction demographically” – pointed out Oskar Sobolewski, an expert on pensions and the labor market.

“No surprises, historically speaking, the fertility rate was lower at the beginning of the 21st century, and in 1990 it was 1.99” – added Sobolewski. He also pointed out that it is assumed that the minimum value of the coefficient, allowing for the replacement of generations, is 2.10-2.15.

At the beginning of the year, the Central Statistical Office reported that the population in 2022 decreased by 141 thousand. The downward trend has continued continuously since 2012.

PiS president Jaroslaw Kaczynski in October 2022 in Częstochowa, he admitted that 500 plus “didn’t work” in the context of pro-demographic expectations related to the program.
