China will lose the title of the most populous country in the world, the UN estimates. According to experts from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), they will be overtaken by India in the coming months. The results of their analysis were included in the report published on April 10, the study of which was shared on Wednesday by PAP.

According to demographers, the population of India will exceed 1.428 billion people. This country will thus become the most populous in the world, overtaking the most populous before Chinawith a population of over 1.425 billion. They should be in third place United States with an estimated population of 340 million. “This is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity and admire the advances in health that have extended lifespan and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality,” the secretary-general said in a statement. UN António Guterres, referring to the results of the UNFPA study.

Initial predictions by UNFPA experts indicated that India would become the most populous country in April this year. In the latest report, published on April 10 on the occasion of World Population Day, they did not specify when exactly this should happen. As they explain, due to the uncertainty of Indian and Chinese demographic data, this is not possible. According to Reuters, this is due to the fact that the last census in India was carried out 12 years ago – the census scheduled for 2021 was postponed due to the pandemic COVID-19.

While both India and China are seeing declining population growth rates, both countries will account for more than a third of the world’s population. According to UN experts, by 2050, eight countries – Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania – will account for more than half of the projected increase in the world’s population.
