Diplomatic relations with China. Honduras promises, Taiwan reacts

Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced that her government would seek to establish diplomatic relations with China. This could mean severing relations with Taiwan. The foreign ministry in Taipei appealed to Honduras not to make a “wrong decision”.

Xiomara Castro announced on her Twitter account that she had instructed the foreign minister Honduras Eduardo Reinie starting negotiations with China to establish diplomatic relations. The president of Honduras did not address the issue of the future of her country’s relations with Taiwan.

Honduras is one of 14 countries that maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Communist China, which claims sovereignty over Taiwan, refuses to allow other countries to maintain diplomatic relations both with it and with the island.

During the election campaign, Xiomara Castro said that she did not rule out severing relations with Taiwan and establishing relations with China, but after taking office at the beginning of last year, she said that she hoped to maintain ties with Taiwan.

In January 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Honduras also assured the Associated Press that his country would continue to develop relations with Taiwan.

Taiwan urges Honduras not to make ‘wrong decision’

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry urged Honduras on Wednesday not to make a “wrong decision” to establish diplomatic relations with China, which would lead to a de facto severance of relations with Taipei.

“We urge Honduras to think carefully and not fall into China’s trap by making a bad decision that will damage the long-term friendship between Taiwan and Honduras,” Taiwan’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
