The construction of a waterway through the Vistula Spit is in progress. The South Bridge over the shipping canal will bear the name of Jerzy Wilk, an MP from Law and Justice who died in May. The naming ceremony will take place on Monday.
Deputy Jerzy Wilk, who died in May, was an advocate of the construction of a new waterway connecting the Bay of Gdańsk with the Vistula Lagoon. The Monday ceremony will be attended by, among others Marek Gróbarczyk and Grzegorz Witkowski, deputy ministers of infrastructure.
The South Bridge has been opened at the end of June this year.
Who was Jerzy Wilk?
Jerzy Wilk died in May this year after a serious illness at the age of 66. In the 1980s, he was involved in building the structures and activities of NSZZ “Solidarność”, then he co-founded the Civic Committee in Elbląg, was a member of the Center Agreement, and then the PiS. He was elected to the Elbląg city council many times. the function of the chairman. For 23 years he managed the Elbląska Spółdzielnia Niewidomych ELSIN.
In 2013, he became a PiS candidate for president of Elbląg in early elections. In the first round, he won 31.8 percent. votes, which gave him the first place out of 10 candidates. In the second round of the elections, he obtained a result of 51.7 percent, winning with the PO candidate. He was the president of Elbląg for a year and a half.
He was a supporter of the construction of the Vistula Spit ditch. Wilk argued that this investment would bring economic and social benefits and ensure security. As a deputy, he acted as a rapporteur for legislative work related to the construction of this new waterway, which will connect the Gdańsk Bay with the Vistula Lagoon.
He obtained a parliamentary seat from the PiS list in the parliamentary elections in 2015 and 2019. In the present term of the Sejm, he sat, inter alia, in the Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation Committee, in which he was the vice-chairman, the Local Government and Regional Policy Committee and the Economy and Development Committee.
Ditch of the Vistula Spit
According to the government, the shipping canal through the Vistula Spit, which will connect the Bay of Gdańsk with the Vistula Lagoon, is a key and strategic project of the government in terms of security. As recently indicated by the Ministry of Infrastructure, after the construction of the waterway for the first time in Poland’s post-war history, it will not be necessary to ask Russia for permission to enter the Vistula Lagoon. And this is the only way to get to the ports of Elbląg, Frombork or Tolkmicko.
The ministry emphasizes that already in 2022, ships up to 85 meters long, 20 meters wide and with a draft of up to 2 meters will be able to enter the Vistula Lagoon through the Spit ditch. However, after completing the entire investment in 2023, ships with a length of up to 100 meters, width of up to 24 meters and a draft of up to 4.5 meters will be able to enter the Vistula Lagoon from the Bay of Gdańsk to the Vistula Lagoon.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, thanks to the investment on the Vistula Lagoon, they will be able to influence, inter alia, ferries, cruise and cargo ships. The region’s accessibility and trade will increase.
The total length of the new waterway from the Bay of Gdańsk through the Vistula Lagoon to Elbląg is nearly 23 kilometers, of which approximately 2.5 kilometers is a section consisting of a lock, an external port and a parking stand. The canal and the entire fairway will be 5 meters deep.
Currently, as announced last week in a statement, the Maritime Office in Gdynia, on the construction of the shipping canal through the Vistula Spit, some works in the shelter ports in the Gulf of Gdańsk have been completed. Tests and adjustment of the mechanisms of the second swing bridge are ongoing.
The contractor of construction works under the project entitled “Construction of a waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Bay of Gdańsk – part I” is the NDI / Besix consortium. The investor is the Maritime Office in Gdynia.
