Vaccination against HPV is especially important for children aged 9 to 14. For both girls and boys. Vaccination is free and voluntary in schools. It only requires parents' consent. The sooner we vaccinate the child, the greater the chance that he will not get cancer in the future.

They are checked and effective – we are talking about vaccinations against HPV, which have been implemented in schools for several months.

– During the first three months of program operation, 36 percent of schools took part in the program and (…) over 60,000 children were applied – says Martyna Wyrzykowska from the SexedPL Foundation. – You can, of course, discuss whether it is a lot or is it not enough. Remember that this is a very short program implementation time. And you have to be glad that there is a response, although there were many votes with fears, whether it will succeed – adds dr hab. n. med. Agnieszka Mastalerz-Migas, national consultant for family medicine.

The program is used, among others, by Primary School No. 3 in Bialystok. – At the moment there are times that there are no families without cancer. Every family is and this is the moment where we can help a little – emphasizes Anna Dec, headmaster of Primary School No. 3 in Bialystok.

Vaccination is free and voluntary. The child's parent must not agree. It is enough for him to fill out the statement. – The program is intended for all children after the age of 9 and up to the age of 14 – informs dr hab. n. med. Agnieszka Mastalerz-Migas.

However, the sooner we vaccinate the child – the better. – We care about vaccinating before sexual initiation and at all before the first contact with the virus, because we can be infected with it not only through sexual contact – indicates Martyna Wyrzykowska.

Vaccinations are dedicated to girls and boys

Importantly, vaccinations are dedicated to both girls and boys. – This is a myth, unfortunately, still often reproduced, that boys only carry the virus. Absolutely not. They are also threatened with diseases. Vaccination of boys provides them with safety for the future – says Wyrzykowska.

According to data from the nationwide program for combating infectious diseases, 54 percent of vaccinated students are girls, and 46 percent – boys. The most vaccinations were carried out in the age group of 11-year-olds and 12-year-olds. The goal of the Ministry of Health is to vaccinate 60 percent of teenagers by the end of 2028. However, this requires an appropriate organization.

– Preparation of school medicine offices so that you can realize vaccination there. Establishments with the staff of primary healthcare facilities so that someone arrives and vaccinates, catching up deadlines. Documentation is also very important – indicates dr hab. n. med. Agnieszka Mastalerz-Migas.

In addition to organizational issues, it is also extremely important to educate about vaccinations. – Educators have, as if to inform children at educational hours and at parents' meetings, that this is the action, so that they simply bend over the topic, explore the topic and make the right decision – says Anna Dec, director of Primary School No. 3 in Bialystok.

A decision that may affect the future of the child. – Vaccination against HPV is a very important oncological prevention – emphasizes the national consultant for family medicine.

“Amiating statistics”

The most common malignant tumor caused by human papillomavirus is cervical cancer. Every year, it is diagnosed with about three thousand Polish women. More than half of them die.

– There are over 2,000 deaths in Poland a year in Poland – introduces dr hab. n. med. Tomasz Fuchs, gynecologist from the University Clinical Hospital in WrocÅ‚aw. – These are alarming statistics, and vaccination allows us to absolutely endure this problem from the map of our worries – believes Martyna Wyrzykowska.

HPV not only causes cervical cancer, but also vulvar, vagina, anal and penis. Human papillomavirus may also be responsible for ENT cancer. – We observe that I would say, such tsunami, growing, an increase in new cases of head and neck cancers just addicted to HPV virus – says prof. Wojciech GolusiÅ„ski from the Greater Poland Oncology Center.

We could avoid these cases. All you need is a vaccine, which shows the example of other countries. – Such an example is even Australia, which in a few years will be able to say that it is a country free from HPV, not even from cancer, but from HPV – says Martyna Wyrzykowska.

– Both the English and the Swedes are already observing the positive effects of these vaccinations. Namely, women who have been vaccinated against human papillomavirus as teenagers have about 90 percent lower risk of developing cervical cancer at a young age – adds prof. Andrzej Nowakowski from the National Institute of Oncology.

Being an adult and sexually active does not exclude the possibility of vaccinating against HPV. Adults buy a prescription preparation with a 50 % reimbursement.
