Doctors inform that Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been in the prison hospital since November 8, is in a critical condition. The former president of Georgia has been on a hunger strike for several weeks after he was arrested after returning home.
“The current state of health of the patient is considered critical” – said a group of doctors dealing with the former president. The statement stressed that Saakashvili’s prison hospital was unable to meet his medical needs.
Saakashvili is in the prison hospital in the capital of the country from November 8. However, he refused treatment there, arguing that he had been transported by trickery. According to the former president, this is aimed at “physically destroying it at Putin’s orders”.
Detention of former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili
On October 1, Saakashvili returned to Georgia to – as he said – mobilize his supporters to participate in local elections. Same day he has been stopped and imprisoned, and the authorities announced that he could not count on pardon or extradition to Ukraine.
The politician returned to Georgia despite the final and binding prison sentences. In the years 2004-2007 and 2008-2013 the president of Georgia was convicted of abuse of power while in office. He himself believes that the criminal cases against him, initiated after opponents from the Georgian Dream party came to power, are politically motivated.
After his arrest, Saakashvili began a hunger strike in Rustavi prison – he considers himself a political prisoner.
