Surgeons from the Children’s Clinical Hospital at Żwirki i Wigury are demanding wage increases. Since June 1, there is no full cast of medical duty. As we found out, the management of the hospital sent a letter to the National Health Fund and the governor on May 30, informing about the risk of closing the pediatric surgery and urology department. Parents of children treated in the hospital are desperate.
The functioning of the Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Urology and Paediatrics Clinic of the hospital at Żwirki i Wigury, which is part of the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw, is under question. Parents of children treated at the facility alerted us to the crisis situation. The doctors’ schedule was not fully staffed. It is not known what will happen with operations from June 1. Parents of young patients are very concerned about the whole situation.
Concerned parents of patients
– The son is after the third recurrence of the diaphragmatic hernia, there are recurrences every six months. He underwent his last life-saving operation on May 8. And that’s when I found out that there was a risk of liquidation of the branch. It is unacceptable to me how this can happen. If the ward closes, we have nowhere to go. Great doctors work here, thanks to them my child is alive, he underwent his first operation a few hours after birth – told us Paulina Małecka, mother of two-year-old Mikołaj.
We also managed to contact Mrs. Agnieszka, the mother of eight-month-old Martynka. – I come from Tricity. My daughter has a very rare defect. We have another visit scheduled in July, what if the branch is closed? We don’t know what to do. We will have to look for contact with the attending doctor outside the hospital – said the woman in an interview with tvnwarszawa.pl.
Upset parents wrote a letter to the management of the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw: “The Children’s Clinical Hospital in Warsaw is able to provide specialist care for newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, it is the only one in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship to have both a gynecology and obstetrics ward in one place, as well as surgical facilities, facilities and the possibility of full diagnostics” – they emphasized in the letter. As they pointed out, there are only two such wards in Poland, one in Warsaw and the other at the Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital in Łódź.
In the letter, the parents emphasized the uniqueness of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology and Paediatrics of UCKWUM. “About 200 newborns with congenital defects are operated on annually, including 30-35 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. It is one of the largest centers in Europe providing comprehensive and optimal care for a newborn” – they emphasized.
“Any problems of the indicated ward mean for parents and pregnant women the need to seek help in other hospitals that are unable to provide specialist delivery conditions for newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which potentially poses a threat to the health and life of their children. Therefore, we kindly ask you to make every effort to ensure that the Clinical Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology and Paediatrics of the Medical University of Warsaw has the best possible conditions for the treatment of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
“The reason is salary expectations”
As we have established, the management of the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw sent a letter to the National Health Fund and the governor on May 30, in which it informs about the risk of closing the branch.
– Surgeons did not fill their shifts in June. The reason is salary expectations. Yesterday, the hospital notified the National Health Fund and the voivode of the risk of closing the branch. The management has presented salary proposals, a meeting on this matter is underway – Barbara Mietkowska, coordinator of the UCKW press office, informed in an interview with tvnwarszawa.pl. As we managed to determine, the meeting ended around 4 pm. For now, there is no agreement, the next talks are scheduled for June 1.
We asked the National Health Fund about the situation in the hospital. “The Mazowiecki OW National Health Fund has received information from the Medical University of Warsaw regarding the possibility of a risk of suspending the work of the Children’s Surgery Clinic from June 1 this year, if no agreement is reached with doctors on pay issues,” the National Health Fund informed us. It was noted that the situation is dynamic. “We are counting on its positive conclusion, we remain in constant contact with the medical entity” – added. At the same time, it was assured that, if necessary, the care of patients would be taken over by other medical entities.
