Donald Trump said on Thursday that Russia and Ukraine “want peace and the chances of concluding an agreement are very high.” The US President estimated that Moscow “proposed large concessions”, which – as he pointed out – is to give up plans to seize the entire attacked state. Earlier he turned to Vladimir Putin regarding attacks on Kyiv.
“I am not satisfied with Russian attacks on Kiev. It is unnecessary and a very bad moment,” wrote US President Donald Trump on the Truth Social platform on Thursday. “Vladimirze, stop! 5000 soldiers a week dies. Let's arrange this peace agreement!” – wrote Trump, referring to Russian attacks on Ukraine.
Trump about the chances of agreement
Later on Thursday, Trump was asked by a journalist if he thought that the Russian president would listen to his appeal to stop bombing Ukraine. He answered in the affirmative.
Trump said a moment later that “he still thinks that both sides of the conflict want peace and the chances of concluding an agreement are very high.” When asked if he set the end date of the talks, Trump replied that “he has his date and wants the agreement to take place quickly, and if he does not arrive, he would have a definitely different approach.”
The exchange took place during the welcome of the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere. – We put great pressure. You don't even have the idea what pressure I put on Russia (…). Different Russia would not talk to us now, and the prime minister understands it better than anyone else – said Trump, pointing to a Norwegian politician during their conversation in the oval office.
The American leader said that Russia “proposed great concessions.” When asked what they rely on, he replied that “they are stopping the invasion and giving up the whole country.” “This is quite a big concession,” Trump commented.
The US President did not want to answer the question whether he intends to impose additional sanctions on Russia, if she would not agree soon to end the war, although he said that “he would not be happy” and “things will start to happen”.
The war in Ukraine was to be one of the main topics of talks of US leaders and Norwayin which he also participated, among others Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, currently the Minister of Finance in the Stoere government.
Will Trump recognize the Russian annexation of Crimea?
Trump refused to answer the question whether he intends to continue military and intelligence support for Ukraine. He said to ask him about it in two weeks, expressing the hope that he would be able to work out a peace agreement earlier and “he would not have to answer this question.”
The US president did not answer directly whether he would recognize Russian Crimea's annexationonly saying that Crimea took place during the rule of President Barack Obama.
– We will do what we can with Ukraine. But when you talk about Crimea, who was handed over as President Barack Hussein Obama (…). There was no shooting, there were no fights, there was nothing. They just passed it on. Now they say: well, can you recover it? I think it will be a very difficult thing to do – Trump replied. He also repeatedly emphasized that “this is not his war” and he does not tell any of the parties.
On Wednesday, US Vice President Jdvance said that Russia and Ukraine would have to exchange territories to reach an agreement on the end of the war. He stated that if the parties did not agree to the American peace proposal, the US would “withdraw from this process.”
Attacks on Kyiv
Ukrainian Air Force informed that at night from Wednesday to Thursday the Russian army fired 70 rockets and 145 drones towards Ukraine. The main purpose of the attack was Kyiv, where nine civilians were killed, and at least 70 wounded. On Thursday morning, the operational command of the Armed Forces types about picking up aircraft in connection with Russia's rocket attack to the western part of Ukraine.
Possible meeting of Trump with Putin
The words of the US president fell several hours after he suggested that he “has an agreement with Russia” and that Ukraine and its president are a greater obstacle to achieving the peace system.
– I think Russia is ready … Many people said that Russia wants to seize everything, but I think we have a system with Russia. We must conclude a system with Zelanski. I thought it would be easier to arrange with Zelanski, but so far it was more difficult. But that's fine, I think we will have an agreement with both sides – said Trump on Wednesday in the oval office.
When asked if the US, as part of the agreement with Russia, intend to consider Crimea as Russian, Trump said that “he just wants the war to end” and pointed out that he did not favor any of the parties. “I don't care how much both parties will be satisfied, if they sign the agreement,” he said.
Trump also said that he could soon meet with Vladimir Putinhe signaled that it would happen in May. When asked if this would happen in Saudi Arabia, where to go on May 13, he replied that “probably not” and that “most likely the meeting would come soon after”.
When asked about a potential meeting with Volodymyr Zelnski in Rome (in the margins of the funeral Pope Francis), which the Ukrainian president is to strive for, Trump said that he did not know if Zelanski is going to the funeral, but added that “he simply hopes that he would settle this matter”, referring to the conclusion of an agreement with Russia.
The office of the President of Ukraine has already confirmed that Zelanski wants to come to Franciszek's funeral.
