Donald Trump is president, what about the Polish community in the USA? “Chicago police have no right to ask anyone about their immigration status.”

On the order of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Polish missions and diplomats are ready to help our citizens. If Donald Trump ordered mass deportations of people staying in the US illegally, it could also affect Poles. – Chicago authorities have prohibited the police and city services from asking about immigration status – reassures Łukasz Dudka, head of the largest Polish newspaper in the USA.

“We will halt all illegal entries into our country and we will begin the process of returning millions of illegal criminals to where they came from,” President Donald Trump said.

Who and what exactly Donald Trump has in mind is not explained by the new administration. Our authorities are preparing for the possible return of compatriots to the country.

Consular posts schedule additional duties, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs advises to obtain passports if someone's document has expired.

Chicago authorities defend immigrants

Łukasz Dudka, head of the largest Polish newspaper in the USA – “Dziennik Zpowiedzkowy”, reassures that Chicago, the city to which Poles most willingly migrated, is and will be peaceful. The local authorities are giving a thumbs up to the federal authorities.

– The city authorities banned the police and city services from asking about immigration status. Chicago police have no right to ask anyone about their immigration status. (…) The city even published a brochure of several pages on how to prepare, said Łukasz Dudka.

– I do not expect any spectacular returns of Dreamliners filled with Poles from the USA, who will be deported overnight. This will not happen – commented prof. Przemysław Osiewicz, political scientist from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
