The meeting in Caracas was the first contact between the two countries at such a high level, since in January Trump was sworn in for the second term as president of the USA and Maduro – the third term as president of Venezuela. The US authorities, like a number of other countries, did not recognize Maduro's victory in last year's elections, commonly considered to be forged.
The spokeswoman for the White House Karoline Leavitt emphasized on Friday that Grenell's visit does not mean that the USA will recognize Maduro as a legitimate leader.
She added that one of the goals of the visit was to ensure the acceptance of about 400 members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang, detained by the US authorities.
