Donald Tusk, chairman of the Civic Platform, said at a meeting in Gdańsk on the 43rd anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements that “the greatest source of strength of the strikers at that time was the belief that the authorities had no right to despise a common man.” “We are all in exactly the same situation,” he said. – Today we feel exactly the same as the workers who joined the strike – he added.

During his speech, he read out the individual demands of the striking workers.

– Behind these specific demands was the belief that we must finally say loudly that we, Poles, will not tolerate lies and contempt. In fact, the greatest source of strength of the strikers at that time was the belief that the authorities had no right to despise a common man. We are all in exactly the same situation, he said.

– I repeat this precisely because I have experienced this lesson here personally, together with many of you, that what is most troublesome is not only the hardships of everyday life, it is not only expensive prices. It is, above all, contempt for the authorities towards ordinary, simple people. It’s this extraordinary, shameless, brazen propaganda of lies, treating people like idiots, complete lack of respect from man to man, he continued.

Tusk: today we feel exactly the same as the workers who joined the strike

– Today we feel exactly the same as the workers who joined the strike. Today, Kaczyński and Morawiecki can say the same thing: “the government will feed itself.” The government on this inflation “It’s working out great,” he continued.

As he noted, “the greatness of that strike was that people were able to organize against the authorities on the biggest, most fundamental and concrete issues of life.”

Tusk said that when the “Solidarity” movement was created, first thousands, then millions of people rose up against the authorities that were stealing national wealth. – Those under Gierek could learn from Kaczyński and Morawiecki how national wealth is stolen – said the head of PO.

Tusk: we should behave like the shipyard workers in Gdańsk did back then

In Tusk’s opinion, currently in many areas of life we are dealing with exactly the same authorities as those on strike at that time. – If this government behaves exactly the same as that government towards people, then all of us, regardless of whether you are 18 or 80, should behave the same way as the shipyard workers in Gdańsk did back then. We should stand up, open our eyes wide and say: enough is enough, he declared.

He also recalled strikes attended by priests, anarchists, trade unionists, leftists and liberals. – We all knew that we had to be solidary and united, because as long as they are in power, we, Poles, have no chance to even argue about our ideas. It’s exactly the same today,” he said.

Tusk: President Kaczyński, if you don’t love people, you will never govern well

The head of PO recalled that during the strikes they shouted: “There is no freedom without solidarity” and “There is no justice without love.”

– Here I am turning to those who called their party a mockery Law and Justiceto President Kaczynski. These words about true solidarity, justice and love are today directed against those who have polluted these values. If you can’t love, don’t run for power. President Kaczyński, if you don’t love people, you will never govern well, he said.

In Tusk’s opinion, those currently in power do not know how to love, but they can humiliate and exploit people and arrange their lives. – There’s one thing you can’t do: help people, because you don’t love people. There is no justice without love, there is no freedom without solidarity, he said.

He emphasized that we need to seize the moment on October 15 – just like in… elections June 4, 1989
