Payments to the election campaign of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, made by his related persons employed in state-owned companies, were the main topic of the conversation in “Fakty po Faktach”, which was discussed by Grażyna Kopińska, a colleague of the Batory Foundation and Szymon Osowski, president of the Watchdog Polska board. – This is not a violation of the law, but it does not look good when people who hold high positions in state-owned companies contribute to the election fund still indicate a specific politician – said Osowski. According to Kopińska, similar situations have occurred in Polish politics for years.

The reporter “Black on the White” Dariusz Kubik and the journalist of the tvn24.pl portal Grzegorz Łakomski obtained copies of the confirmation of transfers to the Law and Justice election fund. They show that people employed in high positions in state-owned companies pay for the PiS campaign. And they indicate not only the prime minister, but also other members of the government who supervise state-owned companies as the target of the contributions. As a rule, anyone can put money into any party’s election fund. Provided it is voluntarily. However, when contributions are made by employees of government-dependent institutions, a number of questions arise.

Expert: It is all very unethical, but the policy is

Kopińska pointed out that “there were large contributions made to politicians during the election campaign, this is a situation that we will encounter for years”. When asked if the “something for something” mechanism is something new in Polish politics, she replied: – The new is, I would say, the size of this practice.

– Such a situation that, for example, all deputies, councilors, people who were awarded a position in local government or state companies pay the so-called VIP contributions, i.e. higher contributions to the party or higher contributions during the election campaign to the election fund has been used for years. The only thing is that this time it is definitely more, first of all there are more people who make such payments – she commented.

– What is the motivation, we do not know – she pointed out at the same time. – It could be this type of motivation: I want to thank you. And it could be this type of motivation: I am counting on something – she assessed. – Of course, it is all very unethical, but such a policy is, I would say – added Kopińska.

President of Watchdog Polska: this is not a violation of the law, but it does not look good

Osowski said that, first of all, I’d like to know about contributors’ motivations. – This is not a violation of the law, but it does not look good when people who hold high positions in State Treasury companies contribute to the election fund still indicate a specific politician – he said. At the same time, he pointed out that “it is all in accordance with the regulations”.

The president of the Watchdog Polska board also said that “this is not a new thing in Polish politics”. – Because we have such situations, either at the level of cities or communes and also in (…) central politics. Therefore, municipal companies or companies of the State Treasury are such a place to reward politicians or their friends – he added.
