Heavy rainfall hit the southern regions of France. 119 liters of rain per square meter fell in Vidauban in one hour. Firefighters carried out several dozen interventions in the Var department.
On the night from Thursday to Friday, a zone of heavy rainfall passed through the French department of Var. The rainfall caused the Aille River to flood. The streets were under water.
Warnings about severe weather
The French meteorological agency Meteo France has issued level 2 warnings of flooding and heavy rainfall in the departments of Gard, Var and Alpes-Maritimes. Forecasts show that there may be a local rainfall of 170-200 liters per square meter. They are also expected storms. The rainy weather in these regions is expected to last until Saturday.
Warnings against severe weather are also in force in the south and partly in the center of the country.
The heaviest rainfall was recorded on Friday morning in Vidauban. Within an hour, 119 l/m2 fell in the city with 13,000 inhabitants. – reported the French portal Le Monde. According to meteorologists from Meteo France, such a large amount of rainfall has never been recorded in such a short time in the Var department. The previous record was recorded on September 25, 2006 and amounted to 102 l/sq m. within an hour.
Numerous interventions
Firefighters who established a command center in Vidauban carried out about fifty interventions, reported the French news agency AFP. Twenty people whose homes were flooded were evacuated to ensure safety. In the morning, a rescue operation was also carried out for ten people stuck in vehicles on flooded roads.
Last week, the departments of Gard and Var were hit by heavy rain, which led to flooding.
