Drivers do not know how to use driver assistance systems. ITS study

80 percent of respondents do not know how to use driver assistance systems, and 53 percent admit that they learned how to use this technology through trial and error – according to research conducted by the Motor Transport Institute.

The Motor Transport Institute (ITS) emphasized that the introduction of autonomous cars can reduce the number of accidents by eliminating human errors, which are responsible for approximately 90 percent. road accidents. However, the Institute pointed out that for this technology to be fully used, drivers should be aware of how driving automation systems work.

Survey among drivers

As part of the Trustonomy project, ITS conducted research among car fleet managers and drivers. The results indicate that despite the awareness of the positive impact of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) systems on safety, 80 percent respondents do not know how to use them, and only 6 percent respondents received training in the use of these systems.

– Unfortunately, as many as 53 percent drivers admitted that they learned how to use this technology by trial and error, which is contrary to the goals of using ADAS. Therefore, the key seems to be the introduction of training programs for drivers – emphasized the director of ITS, prof. Marcin Ślęzak.

He added that for this purpose, the institute, together with the European Driving Schools Association, has developed a report emphasizing the importance of appropriate training in the field of transport automation. He also noticed that different age groups of drivers deal with assistance systems differently.

ITS noticed that young drivers are more open to new technology and adapt to it faster. Research shows that young people are also more willing to manually disable automation in critical situations, and their natural curiosity and understanding of technology make them better at interacting with driving assistance systems. Moreover, as ITS points out, this group of drivers often has greater flexibility in adapting to new conditions.

– Nevertheless, young drivers may also be at risk of over-reliance on driving automation systems, leading to delayed reactions in situations requiring sudden control of the car. In critical road scenarios, with partial automation, this group of drivers experience worse driving parameters, i.e. longer reaction times, collisions or accidents, than in manual driving conditions. Therefore, it is important that educational campaigns and training are aimed at developing awareness of the risk and responsibility related to the use of vehicles equipped with ADAS – emphasized Ewa Odachowska-Rogalska, a psychologist from the Motor Transport Institute.

More of a challenge for older drivers

According to ITS, for drivers over 60 years of age, adaptation to automated vehicles may be more challenging, because seniors often have longer reaction times and may experience difficulties in quickly taking control of the vehicle in critical situations. They also feel more stressed due to the need to operate modern technologies and the fear of losing control of the vehicle.

– However, older drivers can also benefit greatly from the introduction of automated mobility. This technology can significantly improve driving safety by eliminating errors resulting from age-related perceptual limitations. It is also important that training for older drivers is tailored to their needs, focusing on building trust in the systems and gradually introducing them to the world of autonomous driving, Odachowska-Rogalska pointed out.

Also the director of ITS, prof. Marcin Ślęzak emphasized the need to properly prepare drivers. He added that this is also important because even when the driver is attentive and the need to take control is predictable and expected, it takes an average of 10 seconds to regain proper control of the vehicle. In conditions of distracted attention, the reaction time increases almost 3-4 times. These issues are analyzed at the Automatic and Connected Vehicles Competence Center at the Motor Transport Institute.

– Automated vehicles can increase road safety by reducing the number of accidents by approximately 30%. They can also reduce traffic jams, saving drivers in Polish cities up to 100 hours a year. In addition, they will ensure mobility for elderly and disabled people, of whom there are several million in Poland. Finally, autonomous vehicles will be a solution to the shortage of professional drivers, which is estimated at 200,000. employees – said prof. Ślęzak.

He added that the introduction of autonomous vehicles is a step towards safer roads.

– To fully use their potential, we must focus on the education and training of drivers using various driving automation systems, taking into account their individual needs and challenges. Thanks to this, we will appropriately stabilize the level of trust in the new technology, and it may become a real solution to the problems of modern road traffic – said the head of ITS.
