A driving license from the age of 17 is a good idea, said Marek Konkolewski, a road safety expert, on TVN24. He added that “if such a young person charges on Polish roads, makes mistakes, violations, he will pay very high fines, but from his parents' wallets.”
Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak announced on Friday that MI is working on changing the regulationswhich will enable obtaining a category B driving license at the age of 17. He added that the project is ready and will soon be submitted for inter-ministerial consultations.
Driving license from 17 years old – work in MI
– It's a good idea. Young people who are 17 years old, if they sign up for a driving course and under the current law can pass the state exam for a category B driving license after turning 18, they are already prepared. They very often get into the driving instructor's car and the instructor has a so-called “self-initiated drive” – believes Konkolewski.
According to him, “we are already talking about the automotive generation.” – Those people who were born in the 21st century are people for whom a smartphone, the Internet, social media, and a car are normal – said Konkolewski.
He recalled that the first car he drove in his life was a Syrenka 105 Lux. – However, I learned to sit in a driving school car in a small Fiat, and I passed my driving test in a Fiat 125P, so it was a change. Those were completely different times, different roads, different cars – he added.
“Such a person will drive on his own account”
He confirmed that not only the cars have changed, but also the traffic intensity is completely different. – If these regulations come into force and a seventeen-year-old person will be able to take the state exam for a category B driving license and will pass this exam successfully, which I wish to everyone from the bottom of my heart, then let's remember that such a person will be driving on their own account – emphasized Konkolewski.
And he explained: – So if she commits a flagrant traffic violation, happens to run a red light, fails to yield, exceeds the speed limit, she will already be liable for the offense she committed, because she has already turned seventeen. So, speaking in plain, simple language, A seventeen-year-old who commits an offence may already be punished with a fine. So if such a young person will rush Polish roads, will make mistakes, violations, then he will pay very high fines. But from the parents' wallet.
Currently, a category B driving license is issued from the age of 18, but any candidate can enroll in a driving school three months before turning 18.
