The water level in the Mornos reservoir, located in the Greek region of Attica, has dropped significantly. Drought has hit the region hard and exposed the submerged village of Kallio.
The water level in the Mornos reservoir, located in the Greek region of Attica, has dropped significantly. According to local residents, it has dropped by more than 35 meters in the last two years and by about 18 meters in the last year. This artificially constructed reservoir supplies Athens with water. The region has recently been struggling with drought.
The History of Kallio Village
The low water level in the reservoir exposed the forgotten village of Kallio, which was flooded during the construction of the reservoir. 80 houses, as well as a school and a church, were flooded. “The buildings were sacrificed for a project that was supposed to help the capital, but to this day it has not brought any benefits to our region,” said one of the residents. “Now that the walls of the old houses have emerged from the water, old memories have returned,” he added.
In 1980, when the construction of the Mornos reservoir was completed, the people who lived there were forced to move to higher ground and create a new settlement. According to Greek media, most of the people left for Athens, and only a handful of people stayed. Currently, about 60 people live in the newly established village of Kallio.
– In the past, there was snow and rain in the winter, which replenished the water level in the reservoir. Now the situation is terrible. As the water level drops, buildings from the flooded village are being exposed. If it doesn't rain in the winter, the problem will get much worse – said the chairman of the community Kallio Apostolis Gerodimos.
