“Dune: Part Two”. Austin Butler on meeting Timothée Chalamet for the first time

We knew a lot about each other, we had common friends and colleagues – said Austin Butler about the first meeting with Timothée Chalamet on the set of “Dune: Part Two”. It took place in Hungary, in circumstances about which director Denis Villeneuve joked that “it’s the best way to get to know each other.”

Timothée Chalamet plays the main role in “Dune: Part Two” – Prince Paul Atreides. Austin Butler played the psychopathic Feyd Rauthy Harkonnen, his sworn enemy. The actor, who recently became famous for his role as Elvis Presley, joined the cast of “Dune” in the second part. When asked in an interview with the Los Angeles Times if there was chemistry between him and Chalamet on set, he replied: “We basically said hello and then we went to work on fighting and tried to kill each other.”

But even before production began, they weren’t complete strangers. As Austin Butler said, “we knew a lot about each other, we had common friends and colleagues.” – However, we met for the first time at… Hungary, in the stunt rehearsal room – he added. As director Denis Villeneuve joked, “it’s the best way to get to know each other.”

Villeneuve explained that in preparation for the film, both actors “read some lines together on Zoom.” – And I really felt that there was a spark between them. “I mean, they are professionals, their job is to get along,” he added.

“Dune: Part Two” – what is it about?

According to the official synopsis, “Dune: Part Two” follows the impressive journey of Paul Atreides, who forms an alliance with Chani (played by Zendaya) and the Fremen people living on the desert planet Arrakis. At the same time, Paul goes on the warpath, burning for revenge on the conspirators who brought down his family. Standing in front of choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, Paul wants to prevent a tragic future that only he can predict.

In the film’s second trailer, the Galactic Emperor (Christopher Walken) urges Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen to get rid of Paul before he and the Fremen retake Arrakis.

Austin Butler on the role of Feyd Rautha Harkonnen

Butler admits that “while playing Elvis (Presley – ed.), for three years he discovered how to live in his world and that was all he thought about day and night.” But that wasn’t the case with “Dune: Episode II.” – With Feyd, I knew it would be unhealthy for my family and friends – said the 32-year-old actor, nominated for his role in “Elvis” Oscar. – So I made a conscious decision to draw the line.

As he added, “that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an impact on your life. But I knew I wouldn’t do anything dangerous beyond that boundary,” Butler added, talking about working on the role of the psychopathic Harkonnen descendant.
