Eagles 2024. Special message from Ukraine

At the invitation of the Polish Film Academy, Ukrainian filmmaker Valeria Sochyvets took part in the gala and read an appeal from Ukrainian filmmakers. – Two years ago, we understood what was most important: for our loved ones to be healthy and safe, that we need so little to live. Born in 1992 in an independent country UkraineI never imagined that there could be a war in my country and that our neighbor could become our enemy – Russia. We Ukrainians are strong, we are brave and we have a sense of humor even in the darkest times, Sochyvets said.

– That is why I believe in our bright future and we are still fighting, we are still fighting for European values, we are still resisting and we are still making films, demonstrating our talents to the whole world, said the Ukrainian filmmaker.

– On behalf of the Ukrainian filmmakers’ community, I would like to thank the Polish Film Academy for the support it has given us since the first days of the aggression. Many of our colleagues came to Poland. We cooperated with the Polish Film Academy. Many productions received the necessary equipment, allowing us to work in conditions of bombing or power failure. Everyone working at the front and in the rear receives support. My son will be born in a month and this is an example of my faith in the future of Ukraine, in our common European future, she concluded.

Eagles 2024. Agnieszka Holland with the award for her lifetime achievements

One of the most respected directors in the film world, Agnieszka Holland, was honored with the Polish Film Award for her lifetime achievements. The author of, among others, 20 feature films, she is the first director and the third woman recognized with this award. Previously, it was awarded to two actresses: Danuta Szaflarska in 2013 and Maja Komorowska in 2020.

Holland recalled that the Eagle for Lifetime Achievements is her first Polish Film Award, for which she thanked the Academy.

– Some of us earn better, others earn much worse. Many of us still don’t get royalties, Holland said. –

We are in such a joyful moment because it seems that we now have a power that listens to us and understands our needs. At least we can hope so for the next few months, she said.

– The past eight years for Polish cinema could have been worse. These eight years were very bad for many areas of our lives. We’ve made a lot of pretty good movies, and some of them are even very good. We have received various awards not only here, but also at important film festivals and nominations Oscars – she pointed out.

The filmmaker noted that over the past eight years, the film community may have become accustomed to clientelism towards state power, “towards those who have the resources and who can scold us, punish us, reward us, blackmail us, intimidate us, whether towards large studios or corporations which also they can do the same things.” – If we continue to agree to this, as it will be the only conclusion from eight years, then we will not be making good films, colleagues – she noted.

Holland: there is no democracy without humanity

– You only make good films when you are free and not afraid. Even if you feel fear, you know that the greatest victory is overcoming it. We live in a world that is being ruled by monsters. They are faced by honest and quite scared politicians. We can’t be such good-natured, scared politicians if we want to be more than just escapist entertainment in this world. We really have to face this world. We did. If fate has endowed us with talent, if it has endowed us with imagination, we really have no right to waste it. We have to make really good use of it, she appealed.

Holland recalled that since the premiere of “The Green Border” in Poland, the government has changed to the one she voted for, so she should be happy. – Meanwhile, on the border we talked about, things are still happening that shouldn’t be happening. I know: geopolitics, big issues, border security. However, I know that when the border guards continue to torture people and show contempt for them, there is no victory for democracy and humanity. There is no democracy without humanity. If we forget about this, if in this dilemma of choosing comfort or values, we choose comfort, then in the end we will have neither comfort nor values. The monsters that fight our friends, brothers and sisters abroad will win. We cannot forget this. Our films can play a role here, emphasized Agnieszka Holland.
