Today we should consider whether there are legal means to obtain this money – said Krzysztof Gawkowski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitization, in an interview with a TVN24 reporter, referring to the exorbitantly high salaries received by leading government media employees. In turn, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Henryk Kowalczyk emphasized that earnings at TVP should be compared to those at other television stations.
Last Tuesday, December 19, the Sejm adopted a resolution on the restoration of legal order and the impartiality and reliability of the public media and the Polish Press Agency. On the same day, the head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, referring to the Commercial Companies Code, dismissed the current presidents of the management boards of Telewizja Polska, Polish Radio and the Polish Press Agency and their supervisory boards.
Due to the president’s decision to suspend financing of public media, the head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage decided on Wednesday to liquidate the companies TVP, Polskie Radio and PAP.
On Thursday, KO MP Dariusz Joński published the results of his parliamentary inspection of earnings at TVP. It showed that some leading government media employees could count on earnings of approximately PLN 1.5 million per year.
Kowalczyk: I would like to see earnings in other media
When asked about the outrageous earnings in the public media, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Henryk Kowalczyk said that he would like to “see the earnings of all journalists and TV stars of various types.”
To the journalist’s comment that we were talking about public media, media paid for by taxpayers’ money, he replied: “if we compare, then we will be able to talk and comment.”
– It’s the same profession. (..) I say this clearly. Until I see the rest (salary data – ed.), I won’t comment, he insisted. – Public media are also governed by the laws of economic calculation. As you can see, they need to be compared to other earnings, he said.
Gawkowki: they got money for their favor
Politicians from the coalition majority express outrage and announce possible steps that would result in the leading TVP propagandists returning the money.
– I have no doubt that money was taken for what happened on public television, that someone paid for political favor. And for such political favor he received huge amounts of money, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski.
He stated that “today we should consider whether there are legal means to obtain this money.” – Recover them and say: “give back the money you took for propaganda”, because it had nothing to do with reliable journalism – said the politician.
Tusk: They earned forty times more than teachers
The Prime Minister also mentioned a possible refund earlier Donald Tusk.
“Some earned FORTY TIMES more than teachers or nurses. And the list of shame is much longer. Will they lead Kaczyński’s Millionaires’ March? I don’t think so. Will they have to give the money back to the state? Probably yes (original spelling – ed.),” the head of government wrote on the X platform.

Changes in TVP, Polish Radio and PAP

The president also does not agree with the way changes are being carried out at TVP Andrzej Duda. On Saturday evening, the president decided to veto the budget-related act for 2024, which included PLN 3 billion for public media.
Public media have been criticized for eight years for biased and non-objective coverage. The Journalists’ Association described the current activities of Law and Justice in the public media as a “coup of the failed government in defense of its propaganda apparatus.” They emphasized that “eight years ago, when the United Right won the elections, the takeover of public media did not encounter similar resistance.”
