A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Japan on Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. Tsunami warnings were issued for the southwestern regions of Kyushu and Shikoku islands, with waves expected to reach a height of one meter, the JMA said.
The epicenter was located 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of the city of Nichinan on Kyushu, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, adding that the hypocenter was located at a depth of 25 kilometers (15 miles).
