A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck a mountainous rural area in southwestern Taiwan near the city of Chayi, the local meteorological administration said. The first reports indicate minor damage. The tremors were felt in the capital, Taipei.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday local time. According to the Taiwan Meteorological Administration (CWA), the quake's epicenter was in Dapu County, Chayi County, southwestern Taiwan. The main shock at a depth of 9.4 km had a magnitude of 6.4.

Information provided by local services and media indicates minor damage. A search and rescue operation is underway on site.

No 'obvious signs of disaster'

The fire department reported a handful of people trapped in damaged buildings in the city of Tainan. Some of them have already been saved. Due to the threat to life and health, one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world, TSMC, evacuated employees from its factory in the city.

Minor damage was also reported in Chaya, and residents of several nearby towns are facing a lack of electricity. District officials told Reuters there were “no obvious signs of a disaster.” The earthquake was also felt in other parts of Taiwan. Buildings shook, including in the country's capital, Taipei, over 300 kilometers away from the epicenter.

In April last year, Hualian County, located on the eastern coast, was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2. 13 people died in the disaster.
