The plane with several dozen Polish firefighters who took part in rescue operations in Besnia, Turkey after the tragic earthquake, landed at Warsaw’s Okęcie airport after 4.10 pm on Wednesday. Poles saved 12 people. They were welcomed, among others, by the head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, Mariusz Kamiński.

The plane with Polish rescuers from the HUSAR (Heavy Urban Search and Rescue) fire brigade took off in Turkey on Wednesday around 1 pm. It landed in Warsaw’s Okecie airport around 4.10 pm. The firefighters at the airport were welcomed by, among others, the Minister of the Interior and Administration, Mariusz Kamiński, and the Chief Commandant of the State Fire Service, Brigadier General Andrzej Bartkowiak. In the HUSAR group, working in Besnia, Turkey, there were 76 firefighters and eight trained dogs. They were accompanied by five medics from the Humanitarian and Medical Aid Team. During the mission, they managed to rescue 12 people from the mission.

Earthquake in Turkey and Syria

The Poles flew out with help several hours after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria on the night of February 5-6. Its epicenter was in the region of the Turkish province of Kahramanmaras. The cataclysm caused huge damage on a distance of several hundred kilometers from the Syrian city of Hama to the Turkish Diyarbakir. Dozens of smaller quakes followed.

According to the latest figures, the number of deaths in Turkey is 35,418 and in Syria 5,714. The total is over 41,000, and some estimates suggest that the number of victims may even be twice as many.

In Turkey, 47,000 houses were destroyed, with 211,000 apartments.
