Haci Murat Kilinc and his wife spent 109 hours under a collapsed building in Iskenderun, Hatay Province, in the Turkish earthquake. When the rescuers reached the man, he jokingly asked for something unusual to boost their morale.

In Turkey, there is a fight against time, rescuers are looking for and pulling out more people from under the rubble. During one such operation, Haci Murat Kilinc and his wife Raziye were greeted with applause after rescuers managed to extricate them from a collapsed building in the city of Iskenderun. It is located about 160 kilometers from the epicenter of Monday’s first magnitude 7.8 earthquake.

– Can I have a cigarette, please? joked a survivor after spending 109 hours under the rubble. Kilinc asked for cigarettes and tea while he was still trapped under the rubble to boost rescuers’ morale, one witness said. However, the imprisoned man was refused.

One of the deadliest

Earlier on Friday, we informed about a family of six who spent over 100 hours under the rubble and a mother with a newborn, who were buried for 90 hours.

According to the Institute of Geophysics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday – the first with a magnitude of 7.8 and the second with a magnitude of 7.7 – are likely to be among the 20 deadliest earthquakes in the world since 1900. Eleven of the 100 deadliest earthquakes since have occurred in Turkey.

In 1999, the earthquake in Izmit, Turkey, killed 17,000-18,000 people. Measurements showed that the quake had a magnitude of 7.6.

The affected region of south-eastern Turkey and north-western Syria is seismically active and tremors are frequent. However, the latter is the most powerful cataclysm of this type in this region in recent times.
