On Friday, just before midnight, the earth shook in Wales. According to various sources, the quake had a magnitude of over 3. The police received phone calls all night long from surprised and frightened residents. On Kontakt 24 we received photos from Mr. Robert, who showed the effects of the quake in his apartment near Cardiff. The photos show cracked walls and fragments of plaster that have fallen off them.
An earthquake hit the Welsh county of Powys just before midnight on Friday, the British Geological Survey (BGS) said.
As reported, the quake had a magnitude of 3.7, while according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) it was 3.4. The services reported that the tremors occurred at a depth of three kilometers.
“Strong and terrifying”
The editors of Kontakt 24 were contacted by Mr. Robert, who lives in the vicinity of Cardiff, several dozen kilometers away. In the photos he took of his home, you can see cracks in the walls and fragments of plaster on the floor that have fallen off. Reporter 24 reported that he lives in a block of flats on the second floor. “I haven’t noticed the effects outside the building, outside,” he said.
“In the UK, where I’ve lived for almost 10 years, I’ve never experienced tremors and the ones that followed were really strong and terrifying,” he described.
BBC journalist Alex Humphreys, who was in Cardiff during the quake, said she felt a “mini-quake”. “My whole bed shook,” she wrote on social media. Others described it as a “terrifying” experience.
“Like 20 trucks passed in front of the house”
This is also evidenced by the calls made to police officers in Gwent. They said they received “many calls” throughout the night. One of the residents of the village of Rhiwbina, Robert Griffiths, said that he was going to sit down and watch TV when suddenly his whole house shook. – It was like 20 trucks passed in front of the house. It’s the most unusual and quite strange,” he told the BBC.
The largest recorded earthquake to hit the UK occurred on June 7, 1931 in the North Sea. It had a magnitude of 6.1 – reminds the BBC.
