An earthquake occurred in Italy near Naples on Monday. One of the recorded quakes had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale and was the strongest in the area in 40 years. Many people took to the streets, products fell from store shelves, and there was minor damage to buildings.

On Monday evening, an earthquake occurred near the Phlegraean Fields near Naples. Two tremors were reported, approximately 20 minutes apart. The first one had a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 3 kilometers. The next one was 4.4 on the Richter scale and was the strongest in 40 years. Later, aftershocks also appeared.

There is no information about victims.

The tremors were also felt in other towns in the Campania region, for example in Pozzuoli, Afragola, Quarto, Casavatore and Giugliano.

People took to the streets

As “La Repubblica” wrote, many people left their homes in Naples and took to the streets. Due to strong vibrations, objects fell on the floor in some apartments and shops.

The fire brigade received reports of damaged buildings. The services went to the site to assess the situation.

The mayor of Pozzuoli, Gigi Manzoni, appealed to “remain calm.” He also established a special Municipal Operations Center to organize teams to detect any damage to buildings.

Schools were closed

It was also decided that schools in Pozzuoli would be closed on Tuesday.

In the area of ​​the Phlegraean Fields, a seismic swarm was recorded already in the morning – a series of earthquakes that occur one after the other in a short period of time – the strongest earthquake was 2.3 on the Richter scale.
