A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Portugal on Monday morning, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said. The tremors were felt in Lisbon and Porto, among other places.
On Monday at 6:11 a.m., an earthquake struck off the southwestern coast of Portugal. It had a magnitude of 5.4, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported. The epicenter was about 60 kilometers west of the city of Sines, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere reported. The tremors were felt in Lisbon and Porto, among other places. The hypocenter was at a depth of 10.7 kilometers.
“We received many calls”
The Portuguese Civil Protection did not report any casualties or major damage.
– We have received many calls, especially from people who want to know what is happening and what they should do, said José Miranda of the National Office for Emergencies and Civil Protection (ANEPC). He added that in Sesimbra, cracks were reported in buildings as a result of the quake.
