The flu situation this year is “very unusual”, also compared to the years before the COVID-19 pandemic, said Health Minister Adam Niedzielski on Monday. He assessed that this year’s Easter will not be spent “as in recent years, under the pressure of covid”, but under “some pressure from the flu”. He called for caution at family gatherings.

Boss health ministry Adam Niedzielski said on Monday in Poznań that “the main factor determining the epidemic situation in the country at the moment is flu, not covid”. – The number of COVID-19 cases is currently on average about 1,300 per day. There are over 25,000 flu cases all the time. You can see that the scale is incomparable – he assessed.

Adam Niedzielski he added that “the course of the flu this year is very unusual, not only unusual compared to the pandemic years, but also very unusual compared to the pre-pandemic years.”

– Then the apogee was most often at the turn of February and March. This year we had them at the turn of the year. In addition, in recent years, after the maximum number of infections, we have observed dynamic decreases. Now, practically from the beginning of the year, we are dealing with a very stable number of flu cases. There are no such reductions from week to week or from month to month – he explained.

“What’s more, recently we’ve even seen a kind of very small increase in the number of cases,” he added.

Head of the Ministry of Health: We will spend Christmas under pressure from the flu

As the head of the Ministry of Health said, the reasons for this state of affairs should be sought in “making up for a certain immunity gap related to isolation, wearing masks, with greater control when it comes to epidemic matters.”

– For the time being, we do not see a clear signal of a decrease in the number of influenza cases. The decrease in the number of Covid infections rather indicates that the apogee is behind us (…). So if we are talking about Christmas, of course we will not spend it, as in recent years, under the pressure of covid, but we will nevertheless spend it under some pressure from the flu – said Niedzielski.

The minister recommended caution at Christmas family gatherings.
