Many Peruvian and Ecuadorian homes, schools and hospitals were razed to the ground. Some roads were closed to traffic due to landslides in their vicinity. Minor damage was also noted at the Santa Rosa airport, but it was not decided to close it.

In the Ecuadorian province of El Oro, the rising water level after the quake submerged the famous marine museum on the pier. The building remained untouched for 60 years, regardless of the scale of violent phenomena. Volunteers were sent to the site, who tried to save the collected exhibits with boats and pontoons.

According to the Institute of Geophysics of Ecuador, there were two more weaker aftershocks an hour after the quake. As added in the announcements, there is no risk of a tsunami.
