Mental health, core curriculum, student rights – these three issues were mentioned as the most important for students by high school student Paweł Mrozek from Akcja Uczniowska. Together with Deputy Minister of Education Paulina Piechna- Więckiewicz in “Fakty po Faktach” about the assumptions of the Educational Pact discussed and signed at the meeting in the Sejm. The deputy head of the ministry emphasized that from her point of view, the most important thing is “the issue of mental health of children and youth.”

Deputy Minister of Education Paulina Piechna- Więckiewicz (New Left) and a high school student, Paweł Mrozek from Akcja Uczniowska, spoke in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 about education and the situation of students in schools. They referred to the Educational Pact, which was signed in the Sejm on Tuesday during a meeting of representatives of students, youth organizations and politicians. The document is to be sent to the Ministry of Education.

The pact contains 152 demands submitted by youth organizations with a short justification. The document is divided into seven parts:

  • 1. Equality of children and youth at school
  • 2. The well-being and mental health of young people
  • 3. Core curriculum and 21st century competences
  • 4. Assessment
  • 5. Student statutes and rights
  • 6. Teachers are a key aspect of school
  • 7. Institutional and legal changes.

Mrozek from the Student Action, which co-organized Tuesday’s meeting on education in parliament, talked about what was most important in this document from his and other students’ point of view.

– In my opinion and that of my students, the most important thing is mental health, i.e. a psychologist in every school. So that there is no situation where there is simply no psychologist at school. Because we know from the GrowSPACE Foundation that there are communes where there is not even a single psychologist, which should not be the case – he said.

– But of course also the core curriculum, which is very overloaded and outdated. We learn things that will not be useful to us in the future, he argued. Mrozek emphasized that students already know about it because they talk about it with teachers. – This is not only our opinion, the students’ opinion, but teachers also confirm that they would like to change the core curriculum, they would like to be able to teach what we will be able to use in the future – he explained.

When asked about the three most important points of the package, he answered concisely: – Mental health, core curriculum, student rights.

– Because we are witnesses of our rights being violated. Practically every day, students encounter violations of these rights – said the TVN24 guest. He said that these included “for example, a ban on going to the toilet” or “giving a ‘F’ for bad behavior, i.e. a slight whisper during the lesson.”

Deputy Minister: Among many issues, this is one of the most important for me

The deputy minister, however, pointed out that the mentioned document “is a pact that has been developed, and this is valuable, with the communities of non-governmental organizations and social organizations.”

He said that from her point of view, the most important thing is “the issue of mental health of children and adolescents.” – Minister (Barbara) Nowacka appointed me as the plenipotentiary for students’ mental health. Among the many issues that we will talk about today and which are so important, this is certainly one of the most important for me, she emphasized.

According to Piechna- Więckiewicz, “we need psychologists in every school.” – This ideal has not yet been achieved everywhere, but we are also working on it in the ministry with local government officials, non-governmental organizations, foundations and trade unions to make it a standard – she added.
