On Sunday afternoon, a car accident involving a passenger car occurred on the S7 expressway in Marzew near Elbląg. Two people were injured. Emergency services were working on site, and drivers provided them with quick access to the injured, creating a life corridor.
On Sunday (September 1), a road accident occurred on the S7 expressway in the town of Marzewo. A passenger car drove into a ditch. The 52-year-old driver of the Chevrolet and a passenger were taken to hospital.
“The police are looking for the driver of a Ford Mondeo who had previously overtaken a Chevrolet. For unknown reasons, he slightly moved to the right lane, which caused the Chevrolet driver to get scared and lose control of the vehicle, and then drive into a ditch,” the Elbląg City Police Headquarters reported.
Emergency services were working on site, and drivers were able to provide quick and safe passage to the injured by creating a life corridor.
What is the corridor of life?
The life corridor is nothing more than a conventional lane for emergency vehicles moving in a traffic jam, between stopped cars. Every driver who is stuck in a traffic jam and hears the signals of approaching emergency services should move to the outer edge of the roadway of the lane they are in. This creates space between the lanes for an ambulance, fire truck or police car to pass. In this way, emergency services can reach the injured much faster and provide them with help.
The life corridor is particularly important on motorways and expressways, where car traffic is very heavy and in the event of the slightest collision, gigantic traffic jams are immediately created. However, it also fulfils its role perfectly in built-up areas.
“It's not only the emergency corridor that can make the work of the services easier. It is very important for the driver to carefully observe the surroundings. Just glancing in the mirrors and turning down the music can make us hear approaching emergency vehicles more quickly. It is also extremely important to ensure the safety of yourself and the passengers of the car. The point is that no one opens the door on the side of the road where the services may arrive, and no one walks on the emergency lane,” the police remind.
