Elbląg. Mass layoffs in companies. Trade unionists warn that it may get worse, journalist reassures

As described by WP Financein the last three months, 24 employees of Stokota Poland, a company producing tanks for the transport of fuels, industrial waste and refueling airplanes. Layoffs also began last month at GE Vernova's steel foundry, with up to 166 more people set to lose their jobs.

“Given the unstable market conditions that GE Vernova is facing, various options are being analyzed to ensure the long-term sustainable development of the company and its employees. Due to the existing challenges, a project to close the Elbląg Foundry has been developed and an information and consultation process with employee representatives has been initiated, in accordance with legal requirements,” the company's representatives wrote in a statement to WP Finances.

The anxiety prevailing on the labor market in Elbląg is being observed by trade unionists, who claim that the situation may worsen. “We have information that by the end of the year, in several in factories there will be layoffs. In general, we are observing a worsening situation on the labor market, i.e. more and more employees are being laid off, but not only laid off from work. They also agree to less favorable working conditions, there is even a reduction salaries in individual plants by way of notice of amendment or by 'agreement' between the parties,” commented Zbigniew Koban, chairman of the Elbląg Region Board of NSZZ “Solidarność”.

A journalist from a local portal reassures the workers of Elbląg

– The closure of the foundry itself will not affect the increase in unemployment in the city. Besides, GE had two foundries. A cast iron plant, closed several years ago, and a steel plant, closed just now – said Rafał Gruchalski, editor-in-chief of the Elbląg-based website portEl.pl, to WP Finanse.

According to the journalist, local companies are to cooperate with the GE foundry and factory, thanks to which they will develop significantly. – So if GE fires specialists, they find employment in companies that still cooperate with this concern – summed up the editor-in-chief of the Elbląg portal.
