Describing the results of the Niegan Lab (Foundation dealing with supporting journalists and the media) explains that social media users most often appear in accordance with their interests. Platforms know about them thanks to the analysis of their current activity – the subject or person that a person observes whether on the basis of clicks the “Like it” button.

To observe how this mechanism works with political content, the Global Witness organization has set up new social media accounts on devices where the memory was cleaned and the factory settings were restored. Thanks to this, the algorithms did not suggest any content based on the history of the device or application.

Only eight users were observed on each of the analyzed platforms: official profiles of four main parties in Germany and account of the leaders of each of them. Then, through new researchers' accounts, the last five posts posted on each political profile were watched and read. According to the authors of the analysis of the platform, they should classify users as interested in political content, but not expressing a special, greater preference for materials of any of the options.

Then the researchers chose the “For You” option on each platforms and began to categorize each post according to whether it was right -wing or leftist or whether it was supported in it for a specific party and whether he was published by one of the eight accounts they observed.

Almost three -quarters of political content displayed on the tiktoku (74 %) and X (72 percent) could be classified as right -wing, and the largest part of them expressed unambiguous support for the extreme -right party – AFD. Instagram content also had a positive overtones for the right, but to a lesser extent (59 %).

On Tiktok 78 percent of the displayed content was supporting the AFD, while SPD – 8 percent, green – 8 percent and 6 percent CDU. On x 64 percent entries were supported by AFD, SPD – 18 percent, green – 14 percent and 6 percent CDU).

Most of the right -wing content came from accounts that the researchers did not watch. On Instagram 96 percent The displayed content was published on one of the eight accounts, but on the tiktok this percentage was only 8 percent.
