There are two days to the parliamentary elections in Germany. The election programs are not lacking in mentioning Poland. Chades (CDU/CSU) announce, among others, the revival of cooperation with Poland and France, while the far -right AFD rejects the demands of reparations. What else promise the main political forces over the swan?
Social Democrats from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which is the leader Olaf Scholzthey assess in their program before the upcoming Bundestag elections that their government coalition with green and liberal FDP managed to “revive the Weimarski Triangle”, i.e. the Committee for supporting French-German-Polish cooperation. They also declare that in the future they want to use this format as “a motor for faster and more united breaking barriers in the EU and for further transformation of the EU into a strong and united community.”
Although SPD argues that in foreign policy it returns a special role to Polish-German relations, in recent years there has been no breakthrough in Berlin-Warsaw relations. After years of the deadlock in July 2024, the first intergovernmental consultations in six years were held, but according to German media they did not have a great effect. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised, among others The payment of compensation for the living Polish victims of German crimes, however, did not provide a specific amount.

Chades even talk about friendship with France and Poland, of which Germany should be proud. “Friendship with France and Poland is of great importance. In the format of the Weimar triangle we will strive for strict coordination between Berlin, Paris and Warsaw in all important matters of foreign, security and European policy,” they declare in the program.
He determines a similar direction in German foreign policy Free democratic party (FDP). “We want to particularly strengthen extended formats, such as the Weimarski triangle with Poland, and cooperation with other European partners to develop common European solutions, especially in the field of security policy, and to promote regional cooperation” – they indicate in the election program.

An expert with a Weimar triangle: this slogan rained many times
According to the deputy head of the German Institute of Polish Affairs (DPI) by Agnieszka Łady-Konefał “the Weimarski Triangle is such a format that is always great for the slogan that something wants to do.” – This slogan has been raining many times this year. Even the first meetings of politicians have already been held, which announced the future renovated cooperation. And then nothing happened because in France and Germany the political situation remains unstable. There is currently no interest, space for such cooperation – says the expert.
According to Łada-Konephał, “it's definitely good that such slogans appear and there is awareness of the Weimar triangle format in the rhetorical sphere, because it should start with it.” “However, when it comes to what, this format is often not actually active,” she noted. In her opinion, however, there is a chance that “Friedrich Merz as a chancellor, who is a very pragmatic politician looking at profits from political decisions and movements, will see that cooperation within the Weimar triangle pays off. Then something will happen in this format.”

In December last year, the leaders of the Christian Party – Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Markus Soeder (CSU) – made a visit to Poland, where they met with the Prime Minister Donald Tusk. According to commentators, the visit was to be a signal of a possible German cooperation with Poland after the Bundestag election, in which Christian Democrats currently have the best chance of winning. In their program, Christian Democrats also postulate the expansion of railway infrastructure on the German-Polish border.
The Greens support the implementation of the planned Polish -German House in Berlin – a place of memory and meetings devoted to Polish victims of World War II and the Nazi occupation.
The extreme right -wing alternative for Germany (AfD) rejects the demands of war reparations, through Poland and Greece. “These issues have already been finally clarified in international law.
