The Modernization Fund has already allocated over PLN 600 million for the purchase of modern electricity meters – according to a statement from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The total budget of the program is PLN 1 billion.
As reported by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW), on Wednesday, the vice-president of the fund Józef Matysiak and representatives of Energa Operator signed another agreement for co-financing. The project assumes the purchase of almost 436,000 remote reading meters and over 23,000 replacement communication modems. This is the second such agreement with the company, and the first amounted to almost PLN 65 million and was accepted in 2023. As stated in the announcement, customers are to be covered by remote reading by the end of 2026. NFOŚiGW reported that since the beginning of the program, co-financing has been granted for a total amount of over PLN 600 million. The beneficiaries include Energa Operator, Enea Operator, Tauron Dystrybucja and PGE Dystrybucja. The program's budget is PLN 1 billion.
Easier management of electricity consumption
As explained, smart meters measure in real time, eliminating the risk of reading errors. In addition, data obtained remotely facilitates the location of network damage, the identification of customers affected by the failure and allows for better management of energy consumption.
Households that have a remote meter installed can use the so-called dynamic electricity tariffs.
The obligation to replace meters results from the amendment to the Energy Law. According to the regulations, 100% of end users in Poland should be equipped with a remote reading meter by July 4, 2031. EU regulations also provide that by 2028, distribution companies will equip 80% of their individual customers with such devices.
The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) noted that the financing for the program's meter replacement comes from the Modernization Fund, which is supplemented by the sale of 4.5% of the total pool of CO2 emission allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System. It was indicated that it is estimated that under the FM, Poland may receive around PLN 60 billion in 2021-30.
