Elon Musk has broken the Guinness World Record, reports the BBC. No man has ever lost such a sum of his wealth. In just one year, his fortune has shrunk by as much as $165 billion. The founder of Tesla, however, is still the second richest man in the world.

The record was announced on the Guinness World Records website. As we read in the communication, from November 2021 to December 2022 Elon Musk lost about $165 billion.

A record loss

The BBC points out that the estimated losses come from the Forbes ranking of billionaires. Guinness World Records stressed that, according to other sources, Musk’s fortune may have shrunk even further.

The rapid “depletion” of Elon Musk’s wealth is related to falling Tesla share prices. Significant declines began to be recorded after Musk acquired Twitter. As the BBC writes, investors feared that the billionaire busy with his new business would not pay enough attention to his other company – Tesla.

The previous record for the largest loss of private wealth is held by Japanese tech investor Masayoshi Sona. In 2000, his wealth fell by $58.6 billion.

Still one of the richest

However, the BBC notes that the estimated losses relate to the value of Elon Musk’s shares, which can still make up for their losses. The founder of Tesla is still the second richest man in the world. Forbes magazine estimates his fortune at over $146 billion.

The richest man on Earth is Bernard Arnault, who overtook Elon Musk last month to become the richest person in the world. His fortune is estimated at $178 billion.
