Elton John announced on Wednesday that his 32nd studio album with new material will be released in October. On “The Lockdown Sessions” we will hear, among others, Dua Lipa, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Nicks and Nicki Minaj.
Elton John, one of the most important representatives of British light music, is not slowing down. The musician, singer, composer, who in his over 50-year career has already recorded, among others, 31 studio albums, another five concert albums, 9 music tracks for films, announced a new album on Wednesday.
– Some of the recording sessions were done remotely using Zoom, which I have obviously never done before. Some sessions, on the other hand, were held in a strict sanitary regime: we worked with other artists, being separated by a pane. All the tracks are really interesting and diverse, it’s a material completely different from what I’m known for, it’s a material that pulled me out of my comfort zone into new territories. I realized that there is something strange about such work. At the beginning of my career in the second half of the 1960s, I was working as a session musician. Working with other artists during the lockdown reminded me of that. I came full circle: I was a session musician again. And it’s still amazing, he said.
Elton John. Surprising duets on the new album
“The Lockdown Sessions” contains 16 songs, 10 of which are new material. However, critics are paying more attention to the fact that the album will feature a very eclectic set of invited creators. The album will include Dua Lipa, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Nicks, Lil Nas X, Gorillaz, Pearl Jam leader Eddie Vedder, Young Thug, Nicky Minaj and Brandi Carlile. Elton John also invited young singers whose careers are just gaining momentum, such as SG Lewis, Rina Sawayama and Jimmie Allen.
The cover selection is also interesting. The album will include “It’s a Sin” from the repertoire of Pet Shop Boys, recorded with the band Years & Years. Meanwhile, “Nothing Else Matters” from Metallica’s repertoire, was created in cooperation with Miley Cyrus (vocals) and cellist Yo Yo Ma. This recording can already be found on the Metallica cover album, which was released in August this year.
Elton John also re-recorded his great hit “Cold Heart”, in which we will hear Dua Lipa, and the whole was remixed by the Australian duo PNAU. It is worth recalling that the British star collaborated with Australians in 2012 on the album “Good Morning to the Night”. It was his only remix album.
Elton John – preparations for the farewell tour
Elton John – as “Guardian” informs – is preparing to resume his farewell world tour “Farewell Yellow Brick Road”. Although the tour began in 2018, it was interrupted due to music problems and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first of the announced concerts will take place on September 28 in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. In June this year, the artist announced the expansion of the current tour schedule with 31 additional concerts in 2022. On the other hand, the concerts that were previously planned, but did not take place, were postponed to May 2023.
