During a Sunday prayer in Saint Peter’s Square, Pope Francis expressed solidarity with the family of Emanuela Orlandi, the 15-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee who disappeared in broad daylight in Rome on June 22, 1983. It’s been 40 years since she disappeared.

On Sunday, Emanuela Orlandi’s brother, Pietro, arrived in St. Peter’s Square with the participants of the picket, demanding an explanation of what happened to the 15-year-old 40 years ago. Before the midday meeting, they said they were counting on the pope’s words to remind them of this puzzling story.

– These days are the 40th anniversary of the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi. I would like to take this opportunity to express once again my closeness to her family, especially her mother, and to assure her of my prayers. He added that he is thinking of all the families who feel the pain of the loss of a loved one.

Commenting on Italian news agency ANSA, Pietro Orlandi said he welcomed the pope’s words as a “positive signal” and a “good step forward”.

The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi

Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican employee, disappeared in Rome on June 22, 1983. There are dozens of hypotheses about her disappearance. None of the more credible threads considered ever led to anything, and searches at several points in the Eternal City as well as in the Vatican cemetery yielded no answer as to what happened to the then 15-year-old girl who never returned home from music lessons.

In January, Alessandro Diddi, the prosecutor at the Vatican Tribunal (representing the Church in criminal matters), announced that the judiciary had launched an investigation into Orlandi’s case. For the first time in history, the investigators of the Holy See decided to investigate the case. In May, investigators in Rome announced that the Italian prosecutor’s office would also re-examine the case. The Roman prosecutor’s office received documents from the Vatican judiciary regarding this case.

Over the years, there have been many theories about Orlandi’s disappearance. Some linked her disappearance to a plot to assassinate the pope John Paul IIothers suspected that she might have been kidnapped by the Roman underworld. One theory is that Olrandi fell victim to a group of pedophile priests.

– There is one thread that no one has analyzed before. It’s a pedophilia thing. I know from the files that the case of Emanuela’s disappearance has never been investigated in this respect – she said in an interview with Wanda Woźniak from TVN24 Laura Sgro, attorney for the Orlandi family. – I’m not saying now that this is definitely the only right way. But I think it’s a good lead, she said. “We want the work of the investigators to bring us closer to solving the mystery,” she added.

Earlier this year, Pietro Orlandi played a video on Italian television in which the alleged gangster described in detail how young girls were smuggled into the Vatican, where they were then abused. He claimed that John Paul II knew about this practice.

In April Pope Francis he called the allegations “offensive and baseless insinuations.”
