French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech in The Hague was interrupted by a group of demonstrators. – Where is French democracy? one of the activists asked. Protesters shouted “hypocrite” and “president of violence” in French. The security services removed three people from the room.

Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron arrived in the Netherlands on Tuesday for an official state visit. As the media emphasize, this is the first visit of a French head of state to this country in 23 years.

On the first day of his visit, President Macron was due to deliver a speech on his vision for Europe at the Amare Theater in The Hague. According to the media, the speech began with a delay because of the opponents of the French head of state, who unfurled a banner and shouted slogans critical of Macron, including “hypocrite!” and “the president of violence!”.

“Where is French democracy?”

The exclamations concerned mainly the pension reform in France and climate issues. – I think we’ve lost something… Where is French democracy? shouted one of the demonstrators, interrupting the speech of the French president.

– French social and environmental protesters are fighting but the French government keeps ignoring them! another activist complained. A moment later someone added, “Nobody’s listening.” Millions of people take to the streets. Climate conventions have been sidelined.

Macron tried to respond to the allegations against him, but the protesters did not let him get a word out. “The difference between a dictatorship and a democracy is that the demonstrators can have their say,” he said finally, commenting on the behavior of the activists.

A wave of criticism after Macron’s visit to China

Emmanuel Macron has recently come under the shadow of criticism for the statements he made after his visit to China. The words of the French president regarding Taiwan and European policy towards China were criticized, among others, by American politicians from the Republican Party.

Mike Gallagher, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Chinese Communist Party Affairs, called them “embarrassing, disgraceful and geopolitically naive.” French media and international policy experts assessed that the French leader had once again aroused concern among Western allies.
