“Having a description, the uniformed officers began the search. In the city, they noticed a man who told the description, who, at the sight of the policemen, began to behave nervously and run away. So it became clear who they might be dealing with” – we read in the communiqué of the Poviat Police Headquarters in Końskie.

It turned out that the 29-year-old had other offenses on his conscience. He was wanted to serve 15 days of substitute detention for a past offense and was immediately put behind bars.

According to the spokeswoman for the Konecka police, Staff Sergeant Marta Przygodzka, the man was accused of “bringing a fire hazard”. This is a misdemeanor punishable by arrest, fine or reprimand.

The officers point out that during the intervention, the 29-year-old behaved vulgarly, hindered activities and did not want to provide his data, for which he will also be charged in court.

Since the beginning of the year, firefighters have gone to interventions related to burning grass almost three thousand times. Only on one of the weekends in March, before the beginning of spring, the Końskie fire brigade was called to 17 grass and wasteland fires.

Meanwhile, as argued not only by the services, but also by environmental organizations, it is a senseless, risky and destructive action for nature.

The ban on burning grass has been set out in the Nature Conservation Act and the Forests Act, and the Code of Petty Offenses provides for a reprimand, arrest or fine, the amount of which may range from PLN 5,000 to PLN 5,000. up to 20 thousand zloty. If, as a result of setting grass on fire, a fire occurs, which poses a threat to the health or life of many people, or the destruction of large-scale property, then the perpetrator – in accordance with the provisions of the Penal Code – is subject to imprisonment for up to 10 years.

As the State Fire Service points out, burning grass leads to irreversible, adverse changes in the natural environment, e.g. to sterilize the soil and inhibit the natural decomposition of plant residues and the assimilation of nitrogen from the air. – A number of chemical compounds that are poisonous to both humans and animals get into the atmosphere – he explained. He emphasized that burning grass is also the cause of many larger fires, which often lead to fatal accidents. Every year, dozens of people die in such events.

This year, there have already been deaths as a result of burning grass. On March 7, in the Gorzków district of Nowy Sącz at ul. Gucwy, a man’s body was found in the ashes.

In 2022, firefighters across the country recorded 48,232 grass fires, which left 12 people dead and 127 injured. Financial losses caused by grass fires were estimated at over PLN 45.6 million.
