Estonia. Parliament passed the legalization of same-sex marriage

The Estonian parliament voted in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage. Thanks to marriage equality, same-sex couples will obtain, among other things, the right to jointly adopt children. The amended law will enter into force on January 1, 2024.

Parliament Estonia passed the legalization of same-sex marriage on Tuesday. 55 members of the 101-seat parliament voted for the amendment to the law on family rights. 34 deputies were against.

The amendment to the act provides for a change in the definition of marriage, which will henceforth be understood as a union of two adults, regardless of their gender. Marriage equality will enable same-sex couples to: the right to joint adoption of children.

The amended law will enter into force on January 1, 2024.

“I am proud of my country. We are building a society where the rights of every individual are respected and people can love who they want,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas wrote on Twitter.

Other countries allow same-sex marriages

In addition to marriage, it is still possible to enter into a registered partnership agreement. Already registered partners can enter into a marriage in a simplified procedure.

Estonia became the second country in Central and Eastern Europe on Tuesday, after Sloveniaallowing same-sex marriage.
