I do not understand how this asylum package that has been proposed can lend itself to such political clamor. After all, it is about defending European borders better and more effectively, but at the same time fulfilling such a natural humanitarian duty towards those who need such help – said Marek Praw, former ambassador to the European Union, in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24.

Former Polish Ambassador to GermanySweden and the European Union, and former director of the European Commission Representation in Poland, Marek Praw, referred in “Fakty po Faktach” to the ongoing discussion on migrants, the draft EU migration pact and the position of the Polish government on this matter.

He emphasized that “migration policy is not about opening all windows and doors wide, but something more is needed for this, and that’s what the EU is trying to do today.”

– I do not understand how this project, the asylum package that was proposed a few weeks ago, can be suitable for such political clamor. After all, it is about defending European borders better and more effectively, but at the same time fulfilling such a natural humanitarian duty towards those who need such help, he said.

– Today we are in a union of conditional solidarity, so we must be even more careful to meet the requirements of the community. Every government, of course, must consider the dilemma between security for its citizens and fulfilling this duty, he added.

Pravda pointed out that there are two types of response to this. “Either we are looking for a solution to harmonize it somehow, or we are interested in making people think that if you want to be safe, you have to abandon liberal democracy,” he said. – Because the point is to give opportunities to act only to people or politicians who are ruthless, who are in favor of forceful solutions – he added. “Only it’s getting us nowhere.” We are in this situation today, he said.

Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska, the host of the program, drew attention to the issue of the election campaign and noted that work on the migration pact is still underway, and it is clear that PIS “incites hatred against migrants.” She asked how it could end.

– Just like the fun of the pyromaniacs ends. Political pyromaniacs have always used the topic of migration, said the former ambassador. “It’s spinning a whip on yourself,” he said.
