Most Polish pro-European groups are silent on the subject of adopting the EU currency, thus giving way to Eurosceptics – we read in the Wednesday-Thursday edition of “Rzeczpospolita”. According to the latest survey, support for introducing the euro in a few years has decreased from 34.9% in 2023 to 30.7% currently.

“One of the main reasons for the decreasing support for changing the currency in Poland is the passivity of pro-European political groups in this matter – these are the conclusions from the survey 'Poles towards the prospect of introducing the euro' conducted on behalf of the Foundation for Economic Freedom (FWG)” – the newspaper points out.

As he points out, compared to the previous edition of the survey from 2023, the total support for the introduction of the euro in a few years decreased from 34.9 percent to 30.7 percent. Opposition increased during that time from 50.8 percent to 56.5 percent. “Definitely in favor” is 10.1 percent (previously 13.8 percent), “definitely against” – 32.7 percent (was 28.2 percent).

More than half of Poles have no opinion

More than half of the respondents (57%) – as “Rzeczpospolita” emphasizes – are people who do not have strong opinions on this matter and are rather in favor, rather against or answer: hard to say. There are no major changes here in the face of 2023. In this year's survey, a particularly large drop in support occurred among women. 28.5% of them are in favor of introducing the euro in a few years, and 34.1% of men.

– The latest research reveals the persistence of numerous concerns related to the introduction of the euro in Poland. For more than half of the respondents (56%), adopting the common currency within a few years is perceived as a change for which they are not adequately prepared. The proposal to start preparations for adopting the euro arouses much less opposition (32% of respondents). High support for starting preparations remains among opposition voters – comments, quoted by the newspaper, Dr. Robert Sobiech from Collegium Civitas, one of the authors of the research concept.

– However, this state of affairs may change quickly. In a situation where the issue of adopting the euro is consistently omitted from the political agenda of the ruling coalition, even its voters are mainly faced with arguments from opponents of the euro. It is no wonder that 59% of voters already consider themselves well-informed about the euro. PIS and only 48 percent of KO voters – adds Sobiech.
