Belgium lowered the voting age in 2022. Initially, people under 18 could vote after submitting an application in the commune where they lived. Germany adopted a law lowering the age of voters in voting for the European Parliament at the beginning of last year. However, only people over 18 years of age still have the right to vote in federal elections. – When it comes to access to the ballot boxes, we are dealing with a patchwork. It is necessary to explain to a young person that he has the right to vote elections to the European Parliamentbut not in the federal elections – commented Sigrid Meinhold-Henschel, an expert from the Bertelsmann Foundation, quoted by Deutsche Welle.

Five years earlier in the constitution Malta there was a provision on the right to vote for people over 16 years of age. On the other hand Austria already in 2007, it established that people of this age have the right to vote.

Equalization of the voting age in the EU

Under current law, EU Member States are free to set the minimum age for voting. In May 2022, the EP presented a proposal for a regulation that aims to “harmonize a number of rules on European elections” – including the introduction of a uniform voting age – to ensure equality and avoid discrimination. For the regulation to enter into force, it must be unanimously adopted by the Council of Europe and all EU countries must agree to its implementation.
