PiS should show more humility and not interfere when we raise the issue of the level of Polish security – said the head of the Ministry of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak Kamysz, commenting on Mariusz Błaszczak's statement regarding the European “Iron Dome”.

The head of the PiS club and former Minister of National Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, referred to the European anti-missile shield at Wednesday's press conference in the Sejm. This is about the European Sky Shield Initiative, i.e. the European “iron dome” – a proposed project to protect the sky against incoming missiles from hostile countries. Błaszczak admitted that when he was the head of the Ministry of National Defense, Poland received an offer to join it, but – as he said – the proposal was rejected by specialists from the Polish Army involved in the construction of the Polish anti-missile shield. According to him, the project also “favors the German arms industry.”

– Can we afford to finance two systems, including the German one, the so-called European one, which is much more expensive and much less advanced than the Polish system? – Błaszczak asked at the press conference.

Kosiniak-Kamysz about the European Iron Dome: in the project of 21 countries

The current head of the Ministry of National Defense was asked to comment on Błaszczak's statement. – I think my predecessor should have shown more humility. PiS should show greater humility and not interfere with how we raise the level of Polish security. They left a mess, left a lot of things in disarray, without financial security. They quarreled with our allies, said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

At the same time, the minister emphasized that we are talking about a European project because – he pointed out – 21 countries are participating in it. – This is not a project of one country. Countries such as Hungary, probably close to my predecessors, are taking part in this initiative – noted the head of the Ministry of National Defense. – It is not true that this is the initiative and implementation of one country, it is a European project – he added.

Kosiniak-Kamysz also said that if anything can increase “Polish security, especially air, anti-aircraft and anti-missile protection, protection of European airspace, then it should be done.”

– Our predecessors did not join in on this only for one reason – because they were Germans. These are some German phobias that they have in themselves. They built their entire political narrative on this. I hope that this will finally end, because with the Federal Republic of Germany we are both in the European Union and in NATO. If we quarrel with our allies, who do we want to count on? – Kosiniak-Kamysz wondered.

The head of the Ministry of National Defense also said that “we want the Polish arms industry to take part in this and to be strong.” He also pointed out that the military expressed a positive opinion about Poland's participation in this project. Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that all currently implemented anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense programs, i.e. Wisła, Pilica, Narew, will continue to be implemented.

“Tens of billions of zlotys are missing”

When asked whether there would be enough money to implement all these programs, the head of the Ministry of National Defense replied that “our predecessors did not secure money for many programs.”

He noted that currently joining the European anti-missile shield does not require an investment. – Of course, if we make joint purchases, such investments will appear, but we still make many purchases – he said. He added that the PiS government did not secure financing for infrastructure, hangars, “they did not even prepare the planes that reached Poland, I am talking about FA-50.” – There are tens of billions of zlotys missing for what was ordered by my predecessors – he said.

– They made purchases, but did not secure the funds. PLN 46 billion is missing in the next 10 years for infrastructure: airports, hangars – said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI) formula

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who on Monday talked with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, among others. on the construction of effective anti-missile and anti-aircraft defense in Europe, he said that Poland wants to participate in the work on the construction of the so-called iron dome. – Denmark, but also Germany and Great Britain are cooperating in the European Union on the European anti-missile and anti-aircraft defense system. Iran's attack on Israel confirmed how important it is to have such an installation, Tusk said then.

On Tuesday, the head of government emphasized that Poland's potential participation in the European Sky Shield Initiative is not an alternative to anything, but a complement. The Prime Minister emphasized that “no one is talking about abandoning the existing programs.” The Prime Minister noted that Poland will cooperate within the European Air Shield Initiative and will further develop the Pilica, Narew and Wisła systems. In his opinion, our country should be part of many missile defense systems so that a dome as tight as possible is created over our sky.

The European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI) formula was proposed by Germany in 2022. Initially, 15 countries joined it. Currently, 21 countries are participating in the initiative.
