European Parliament elections 2024. Who is running from Podkarpacie? Here are the “ones” from district no. 9

In the European Parliament elections, 69 candidates are fighting for the seat from district number 9. Seven top the committee lists. The “ones” here include, among others: experienced MEP Elżbieta Łukacijewska and Daniel Obajtek, former president of Orlen, who is connected with three ongoing investigations. What is worth knowing about the list leaders in Podkarpacie?

On Sunday, June 9, Poles will elect 53 representatives to the European Parliament. In district number 9, covering the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, seven electoral committees fielded their candidates. Dr. Dominik Szczepański, a political scientist from the Institute of Political Science of the University of Rzeszów, is convinced that the three representatives of Podkarpacie will win European mandates. In his opinion, due to the way the votes are counted, the “ones” of KO and PiS, i.e. Łukacijewska and Obajtek, will definitely get them. Who else topped the lists and what is known about them? Here are all the “ones” from Podkarpacie.

LIST NO. 1. Elżbieta Burkiewicz

List Third Way Poland 2050 Committee Szymon HołowniaPolish People's Party Elżbieta Burkiewicz opens in Podkarpacie. She is a member of Szymon Hołownia's Polska 2050. He currently sits in the Sejm. She was elected to it by the votes of 11,582 voters of the Rzeszów district. There, she serves as deputy chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry and vice-chairwoman of the Parliamentary Group for Celiac Disease, as well as the Podkarpackie Parliamentary Group.

Burkiewicz was born in 1964 in Mielec. He has higher education. She obtained it at the University of Silesia, where she completed her master's degree in art education. Since 1998, she has been running a clothing company with her sister.

LIST NO. 2. Tomasz Buczek

Tomasz Buczek is number one Election Committee Confederation Freedom and Independence. He belongs to the Confederation of Freedom and Independence party. He is the district representative of the National Movement. In the past, he was vice-president of the All-Polish Youth in Podkarpacie. In the 2018 local elections, he unsuccessfully ran for a councilor in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. In the 2019 European Parliament elections, he unsuccessfully ran for an MEP. He also ran in last year's parliamentary elections. He won 11,341 votes, which did not allow him to take the seat.

Professionally, Buczek is an entrepreneur. He lives in Kolbuszowa Górna. In March last year, he “became famous” for throwing eggs at the Minister of Agriculture, Henryk Kowalczyk, during the European Agricultural Forum in Jasionka, near Rzeszów.

LIST NO. 3. Paweł Frankiewicz

List number 3 is the candidates Election Committee of Non-Party Local Government Voters – Normal Poland in Normal Europe. Her number one is Paweł Frankiewicz, a 45-year-old lawyer living in Munin. In the past, he unsuccessfully ran for a seat as a member of parliament of the Republic of Poland and as a councilor of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship Assembly. He does not belong to any political party.

LIST NO. 4. Grzegorz Rykała

Polexit Election Committee he chose Grzegorz Rykała as his “number one” in Podkarpacie. He is a 37-year-old public administration specialist living in Niechobrz. Rykała does not belong to any political party. In October 2023, he ran in the elections to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland from the list of the Independent Self-Government Committee. He won 751 votes, which did not translate into a parliamentary seat. In April, he ran for a seat on the City Council in Boguchwala. He obtained 60 votes. In 2019, he was the “number one” of KW Polexit in the European Parliament elections. He did not win a seat in the European Parliament.

LIST NO. 5. Elżbieta Łukacijewska

List Coalition Election Committee of the Civic Coalition Elżbieta Łukacijewska opens in Podkarpacie. She is an experienced MEP. She sat on the benches of the European Parliament for the first time in 2009. Joined the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats). Previously, Łukacijewska sat in the Sejm of the 4th, 5th and 6th terms. She was also the mayor of the Cisna commune.

Łukacijewska comes from Godowa in Strzyżów County in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. She is an economist by education. She graduated from the Rzeszów University of Technology. Before starting her political career, she worked as an accountant. She has been a member of the Civic Platform since 2001.

In previous European elections Łukacijewska achieved a success that was surprising to many, when, starting from the last place on the list, she was the only European Coalition candidate in the district to win a seat. The Cisna commune was also the only place in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship where the European Coalition defeated Law and Justice. 243 out of 798 voters voted for Łukacijewska, followed by Bogdan Rzońca and Tomasz Poręba from PiS.

LIST NO. 6. Wiktoria Barańska

One Coalition Election Committee Left in district no. 9 is Wiktoria Barańska. He is 27 years old. She is a member of the Left Together party. In April, she ran for a seat in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship Assembly. She won 1,254 votes, which did not allow her to take the seat. During last year's parliamentary elections, she ran unsuccessfully for the Sejm. In 2018, she ran for a seat as a councilor in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship Assembly.

Barańska was born in Sanok. She is a literary scholar by education. He is currently pursuing his doctoral studies at the Jagiellonian University. He sits on the board of the Spółeknik Association. As the description there indicates, Barańska deals with translations and copywriting on a daily basis. She also cooperates with the SPUNK foundation in Łódź as a sex educator. In the past, she was a co-organizer of Krakow Manifa. She also got involved in leading the first equality march in her hometown of Sanok.

LIST NO. 7. Daniel Obajtek

Law and Justice Electoral Committee he placed Daniel Obajtek first on his list. He has been associated with PiS for over a decade. He began his political career as the mayor of the Pcim commune. In later years, he was the president of the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture, president of the management board of the Energa Group, member of the supervisory board of Lotos Biopaliwa, as well as president of the management board and general director of PKN Orlen. He was dismissed from the last of these functions on February 5. During his term, Orlen sold 30 percent. shares in the Gdańsk Refinery by Saudi Aramco, taken over by Lotos i PGNiG. He also purchased the Polska Press publishing group.

Obajtek is a graduate of the Executive MBA organized by the Gdańsk Foundation for Management Education and validated by the IAE Aix-Marseille Graduate School of Management. He also graduated from the Private University of Environmental Protection in Radom.

Obajtek has aroused controversy over the years, including: thanks to the wealth he has accumulated. According to Wirtualna Polska's arrangements, in 2021 he was to be the owner or co-owner of as many as 39 properties. He also became the center of media attention due to numerous scandals related to him. In 2013, an indictment was brought to court regarding Obajtek's previous activities in the Elektroplast company owned by his uncle and the possibility of “collaboration (by him – ed.) with an organized criminal group, accepting a bribe from its boss and fraud.” The investigation was discontinued in 2017.

In February 2021, “Gazeta Wyborcza” published a series of articles on the ” Obajtek tapes ” that it revealed. In March this year, Onet published another series of recordings with the participation of Daniel Obajtek. This time they concerned his activities during his presidency at PKN Orlen.

At the end of May Minister of Justice, Attorney General Adam Bodnar said that three investigations related to Daniel Obajtek are ongoing. They concern the merger of Lotos with Orlen and overvaluation gasoline prices and advance payments for oil purchases. Bodnar added that there are also “smaller cases” involving the submission of false testimony and the refusal of inspectors to enter Orlen. NIK.

Daniel Obajtek however, he claims that there are no proceedings pending against him. – The national prosecutor (…) directly said that there are no proceedings pending against me, they are ongoing “in the case” – he emphasized.

According to Dr. Dominik Szczepański, a political scientist from the University of Rzeszów, apart from Obajtek, “Maria Kurowska (no. 7 on the PiS list) and Marek Kuchciński (no. 10 on the PiS list), i.e. record holders in their constituencies, have a good chance (of winning the European mandate – ed.).
