To put pressure on EU leaders to increase spending on global warming and health protection, French MEP Pierre Larrouturou will go on a hunger strike.

– It’s indecent to hear that there is no money for health, climate and work, while financial markets have never been so healthy. In order to put pressure on Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, I am starting a hunger strike, said Socialist and Democrat MEP Pierre Larrouturou.

As he explained at a virtual press conference broadcast from the European Parliament, without additional funds in the long-term budget, there is no chance for the EU to achieve the new greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2030. – I intend to be in the European Parliament day and night, without food, to publicize this scandal: people are not aware of this, but we are moving towards a situation where there will be almost no money for climate, health or serious resources for employment – emphasized Larrouturou.

“If we don’t tax financial speculation, the European Green Deal is dead.”

Heads of state and government adopted a political agreement on the EU budget for 2021-2027 at their summit in late July. It sets the upper limit of expenditure from the EU coffers. Currently, representatives of the Member States and the European Parliament are negotiating detailed solutions for each program.

MEPs demand an increase in spending in 15 key areas, including for research, defense, education or student exchanges, but the Member States are not willing to add money. The deputies suggest, inter alia, exclusion of funds from which interest on the coronavirus recovery fund will be repaid outside the budget. This would give several billion euros over seven years. However, EU capitals do not want to agree to this.

Larrouturou said that the EU should establish new own resources – especially a financial transaction tax (FTT) to fund the EU treasury. – If we do not tax financial speculation, the European Green Deal is dead – he assessed.

The French emphasized that he is healthy, so he believes that the form of protest will not be dangerous for him. He also expressed his hope that an agreement on the budget would be reached within two weeks. The negotiations on the multiannual financial framework should be completed early enough to allow disbursements under the new seven-year perspective from 1 January.
