The EU ban on registration of new combustion cars after 2035 is controversial. Poland voted against, the Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moscow wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. She also expressed her belief that in 2026 the plans in this regard will be reviewed.

The EU Council adopted on Tuesday a regulation setting stricter CO2 emission standards for new cars and vans. The regulation assumes 100 percent. reduction of carbon dioxide emissions for new vehicles after 2035.

Poland opposes the ban on combustion cars

The Minister of Climate and Environment referred to the new regulations in a Twitter post Anna Moscow. “Poland voted against the ban on the sale of new internal combustion cars after 2035,” the head of the Ministry of Culture and Environment said.

“Non-transparent and informal discussions where Germany pushing through solutions that are mainly beneficial to their market, shows that this has nothing to do with a just transition,” assessed the Polish minister. Anna Moscow added that the factors determining the choice of technology for the next decades should be the market and societies, and not EU coercion.

As the head of the Ministry of Culture and Environment pointed out in another entry, a revision of the regulation on the ban on the registration of new combustion cars is planned for 2026. “I am convinced that by then the EU will understand the absurdity of this decision and plans in this regard will be verified” – she stressed.

EU ban on combustion cars

The new EU regulations set the following goals: reduction of CO2 emissions by 55%. for new passenger cars and 50 percent. for new vans in 2030-2034 compared to 2021 levels; 100 percent reduction of CO2 emissions for both new cars and vans from 2035.

The adoption of the rules – which de facto means a ban on the registration of new cars with a combustion engine from 2035 – has been called into question in recent weeks after Germany raised objections, demanding an exception for the so-called e-fuel.

As a result of negotiations between Berlin and Brussels, a point on this issue was added to the regulation. European Commission committed to presenting a proposal for the registration of vehicles running exclusively on CO2-neutral fuels after 2035.

In 2026, the EC will make a detailed assessment of progress towards achieving the 100% targets. emission reductions and the possible need to review them.
