Evacuation of over a million people. The super typhoon hit

On Saturday evening local time, Super Typhoon Man-yi, called Pepito in the Philippines, reached the city of Panganiban in Catanduanes province. It was accompanied by winds reaching an average speed of 195 kilometers per hour. The storm has weakened slightly and is now accompanied by wind gusts of up to 185 km/h. These types of elements gain the prefix “super” when their wind speed reaches 185 km/h and more.

The country's weather agency on Saturday warned of a “potentially catastrophic and life-threatening” situation in provinces along the super typhoon's path, especially low-lying and coastal areas.

On Sunday, the Reuters news agency reported that more than a million residents had been evacuated. Earlier, it was reported that over 650,000 people were evacuated.

“We evacuated because every time a typhoon hits, the water level in the nearby river rises,” said Amalia Santisas, one of the people living near the coastal areas in the capital Manila who complied with evacuation orders. – We have children with us and we are afraid – she added.

No casualties were reported, although strong winds damaged homes, schools and public buildings in Catanduanes, civil defense chief Ariel Nepomuceno told Reuters.

Man-yi, the sixth tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines in a month, is heading towards southern and central Luzon, threatening the Capital Region.

“Pepito is expected to weaken slightly as a typhoon before making landfall for the second time,” state weather agency PAGASA said in a statement, using the national name stormcalling for precautionary measures.

A severe storm watch has been issued for the eastern parts of Polillo and Calaguas islands.

In the town of Virac in Catanduanes, the wind stopped and the rain eased, allowing some people who had sought shelter to return home, local disaster official Roberto Monterola told DZBB radio.
