A Moscow court rejected Evan Gershkovich’s appeal against the decision to arrest him. An American journalist detained in Russia appeared at the trial. It was the first time he had been seen in public since his arrest.

Evan Gershkovich, a 31-year-old journalist from The Wall Street Journal, was arrested in Yekaterinburg in late March in the Urals. He is the first American correspondent since the Cold War detained by Russia for alleged espionage. He is being held in Lefortovo. According to former prisoners, their lawyers and families, this place was deliberately designed so that the prisoners feel forgotten by the whole world.

Gershkovich in court

On Monday, Gershkovich appeared in a Moscow court for a hearing on an appeal against the arrest decision.

The journalist was standing behind the glass, wearing a plaid shirt and jeans. The cameras briefly captured his slight smile and a reassuring blink of the eyes and a nod. Gershkovich stood with his arms folded and – according to Reuters – did not speak.
