Mining company Lucara Diamond Corp. announcedthat the unique stone was mined in her diamond mine in Karowe, Botswana. The largest diamond for jewelry is still the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was mined in South Africa in 1905, when it was still a British colony. The diamond was then split into several gemstones, some of which are now part of the British Crown Jewels.

“We are delighted with the discovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond. It not only demonstrates the potential of our Karowe mine, but also validates our strategic investment in state-of-the-art XRT technology. The ability to recover such a massive, high-quality stone in pristine condition demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach to diamond sourcing and our commitment to maximizing value for our shareholders and stakeholders,” said Lucara CEO William Lamb in a statement.

In 2019, the 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond was also discovered at the Karowe mine, and in 2017, the 1,111-carat Lesedi La Rona stone.

The Botswana government has confirmed that this is the largest diamond discovered in their country.

“Botswana’s diamond industry provides broad socio-economic benefits to the country that extend far beyond the mining sector. Its influence supports national development by funding key areas such as education and healthcare,” Lamb added.
